This is the hardest part,
in waiting for our turn,
I can hear my heart pound,
and feel my blood burn.
Right before we take the stage
standing in the wings, deeply engaged,
we watch the competition finish their dance
while our legs grow antsy longing for their chance.
Though it's only seconds before our music is queued,
it feels like we're left with a lifetime to review.
I remember when the steps were no longer a confusing mess,
my feet linking them together with amazing prowess.
And as lyrics began to make sense
a tale emerged to share with our audience.
With every practice the story came into sharper relief,
the costume and music and moves, a magical motif.
And like chasing the sun on a path crooked and bent,
we strove to be better, even when our bodies were spent.
A palpable energy swirls throughout the theatre,
like a dam about to burst and matching my pulse in meter.
It's time to put aside the nerves and let everything flow,
a last adjustment of my costume, ensuring my hair is just so.
This is what we've worked for and it feels like we're home,
take a deep breath, exhale, that moment has come.
Good luck to all of our competitive dancers!!
Dance with pride. Dance with confidence. Dance with joy in your heart.
