Alana Koolen

BA (HONS) DANCE PERFORMANCE AND TEACHING

AIDT ADVANCED ASSOCIATE

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, CEO

Alana took her first dance class at the age of three. Following in her sister’s footsteps, what started as a desire to be just like her big sis turned into a passion for the arts that she couldn’t be more thrilled at being able to turn into a career.

During her childhood, Alana was educated at and danced competitively for a studio in South Surrey. She competed in numerous events in the lower mainland, as well as attending competitions in Seattle and Portland, even travelling to California where she attended a summer intensive at The EDGE Performing Arts Centre in Los Angeles and went on to perform at Disneyland.

Alana completed the AIDT (Association of International Dance Teachers) exams and achieved Honours With Distinction in the advanced syllabus. Outside of the studio, she took summer acting classes and performed in the Royal City Youth Ballet Company’s tour of “The Nutcracker”. In high school, she enrolled as a dance major at Langley Fine Arts School where she choreographed her first pieces and discovered the merits of collaborating with other art forms.

After graduation, Alana continued her dance education overseas at the University of Central Lancashire in Preston, England, through a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance Performance and Teaching. While there, she performed throughout Northern England with the Preston Youth Dance Company and the UCLAN Dance Competitive Team. In her second year she was appointed captain of the ballet competitive team, which was an honour she gladly accepted, leading her team to win several awards during her tenure. Her time at school allowed her to gain a new perspective on contemporary dance while working with some of England’s leading dance practitioners including Lyndsey McConville, Anthony Briggs, Jennie Reeves, and Giorgio De Carolis. She also had the opportunity to travel Europe for five weeks and experience many different styles of art and dance from other cultures which she values as an important experience.

In the summer of 2017 Alana graduated from UCLAN with honours, at which time she returned to the Lower Mainland and found positions at several local studios to begin inspiring a new generation of dancers. Always up for a challenge, Alana taught and choreographed many styles from ballet and jazz to hip hop and musical theatre, with both recreational and competitive classes. Outside of the classroom her dancers earn top marks and judge’s choice awards. While inside the studio her bubbly personality combined with her frank and constructive critiques create the perfect environment for learning dance to be fun.

Never finished absorbing knowledge, Alana has added certifications in AIDT Modern exams for which she received Distinction with Honours and compliments from her examiners for her thorough teaching style and attention to detail. She has achieved the level of Advanced Associate of the AIDT program, with many of her students receiving top marks in their exams. She has also continued her education in Vaganova Ballet through the Society of Russian Ballet, and has received certification through Alixa Flexibility. She continues to seek opportunities to further her repertoire as an educator.

Owning her own studio had always been a dream so when presented with the opportunity to lead Young At Arts into a new era, Alana was thrilled. During her several years with the YAA team as a teacher, she found a shared enthusiasm and passion for dance and is now delighted to call it home. Alana’s Young At Arts Dance Academy is a place where dance is for everyone. Her belief is that dance is an important tool that creates well rounded and driven young people who go on to have the desire and dedication to achieve their goals. A studio is a family, where faculty and students support and encourage each other while working together to create an environment free of judgment, peer pressure, or bullying. All dancers no matter their age, ability, or skill are valued. This is how she grew up learning that dance should be, and this is how she intends to share her love of dance with the next generation.
